Thank you for your patience this afternoon. Buses were all at a minimum 15 behind due to their High School and Middle School runs. Students should be arriving home safely soon! I also want to especially thank the parent pick-up cars for working with us. Once we're in the swing of things, it'll be a much quicker process!

Please be patient with our bus drivers as they learn their routes here at the beginning of school. Some buses may run late. Our bus drivers are doing their best to get all students home safely!

Welcome Back, Lions!
I hope everyone had a relaxing summer. We've had a great first day of school so far! I do have a few pieces of information to pass long before dismissal at 3:20pm.
1) Parent Pick-Up will continue to line up in 3 lines in the left hand parking lot until dismissed by a staff member to circle the building. Students will be loaded into cars under the awning as always. Please keep in mind that the first several days of school may have some hiccups, so be prepared to wait a little longer until everyone is in the swing of things. If you have your Parent Pick-Up number from last year, please continue to use that. If not, be prepared to show your ID in case you are asked.
2) If you have any transportation questions or changes for your child this afternoon, please contact the school office before 2:50pm.
3) Sports Try-Outs for grades 3-5 will begin tomorrow after school. All students are required to have a sports physical, a permission slip, and the CERP training for both student and parent. If you have missed the CERP sessions at GES, there will be one final session at Stratton Elementary this afternoon at 4pm.

Don't forget to join us for Open House tomorrow from 3-5 in the gym! Students who collect stickers from all 4 booths will receive a FREE Kona Ice! (Parents and siblings may purchase their own.)
CERP training will also be offered for those interested in trying out for school sports at 3:30 and 4:15 in Room 14.

If your child is interested in trying out for sports (Grades 3-5), don't forget that the first of 3 CERP sessions begins at 6pm this evening at GES! Enter through the left hand main door and follow the signs.
If you miss tonight's session, don't worry! We will have 2 sessions during Open House on August 21.

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, please note that Pre-K start dates differ from Grades K-5!
First Days of School:
August 22: Grades K-5
August 28: 1/2 of Pre-K Class
August 29: 1/2 of Pre-K Class

ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF 3-5 GRADE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN SCHOOL SPORTS:
Ghent Elementary will be hosting 3 CERP trainings for students and parents/guardians in order to comply with SB 602. All students interested in trying out for basketball, volleyball, or cheer MUST attend a CERP training at a Raleigh County school. The following sessions are scheduled at GES:
August 13 at 6:00 PM
August 21 (Open House) at 3:30 PM
August 21 (Open House) at 4:15 PM
If these dates do not work for you and your child, please attend a CERP training at another Raleigh County school.
To answer some frequently asked questions:
1.) Is this required?
Yes. Senate Bill 602 requires all schools to provide an in-person training for student athletes, their parents/guardians, and coaches regarding cardiac emergency procedures. A student may not participate in practice until this meeting is attended.
2.) How long is the training?
The training will last approximately 30 minutes from start to finish.
3.) Do I have to attend at my home school?
No, the training offered will be the same at every school. You may attend any training at any Raleigh County School. However, if you attend a training that is not at your home school, make sure that you get your signed verification form to the school that your child attends.
4.) What if I have multiple children at different schools?
You can attend ONE training, you just have to make sure that you sign in for each school that your child attends, as well as fill out a form for each student that is participating in athletics this year. It will be your responsibility to get the form to your child’s home school.
5.) Can I attend this meeting if my student plays winter/spring sports?
Yes, make sure on the form to list any sports your student may participate in this year. This form is good for one school year, so long as all the sports are listed on the original form.

Incoming message part 2 of 2:
GES will have meetings in the coming weeks; however, I know some of our athletes have older siblings or friends who play for a middle or high school. Please know that you and your child may attend the offered training at any Raleigh County School. If you attend a training that is not at our school, be sure that you get your signed verification form that you and your child attended the training. You must provide this form to GES or your child will not be able to try out or play a sport. As a reminder, volleyball, cheer and basketball are available to our 3rd-5th graders only.
In addition to the cardiac training, a physical exam completed by a physician is REQUIRED before your child can try out for a sport. This sports physical must be dated May 1, 2024 or later. Tryout dates and times will be posted as that information becomes available.
Thank you all! Go Lions!

Incoming message part 1 of 2:
Attention ALL 3rd-5th grade Ghent Athletes and Families:
Last year, the legislature passed Senate Bill 602 which requires each school to have a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan in the event of a cardiac emergency. In addition to this requirement, all students and parents of student athletes must attend an informative session regarding cardiac emergencies in sports and must sign a form acknowledging that they have received this information before their child can participate in any sport.
Please keep in mind this is mandatory. Students WILL NOT be permitted to try out or participate in a sport if they do not attend the training with a parent or legal guardian.
While we realize this may be an inconvenience, this is a new law we must comply with based on the outcome of the legislative session.

As you prepare for the upcoming school year, take a look at some of our student guidelines!

ATTENTION PARENTS OF 5TH GRADE STUDENTS ON THE TENNESSEE TRIP: Due to the timing of the bus arrival, please meet your students at the Ghent Volunteer Fire Station to sign them out from their Tennessee trip! Please make sure you do not block the bays! The bus should be arriving there in roughly 30 minutes.

We will be selling ice cream Thursday and Friday!

Our Lost & Found is full! If you know your student is missing anything, please have them look through our box in the office, or you are welcome to come search yourself. All items not picked up by May 30 will be donated. Thank you!

Thank you all for being so accommodating with Parent Pick-Up yesterday! All of our volunteers were able to get out before the line began!
We do have one more event going on in our building this afternoon. I'd like to ask Parent Pick-Up to hold off on lining up until 2:35 at the earliest.
Again, please don't line up for Parent Pick-Up until 2:35 today. Thank you so much for being flexible with our crazy end-of-the-year schedule!

Please remember to hold off on lining up for Parent Pick-Up this afternoon until after 3pm due to the extensive number of volunteer vehicles for Field Day today! Thank you!

DON'T FORGET! Tomorrow is Field Day at Ghent Elementary! Rain or shine, we're ready for a fun-filled day of activities thanks to our amazing parent volunteers! Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1) Please do not begin lining up for Parent Pick-Up until after 3:00 PM due to the amount of volunteers' cars that will be in our parking lot!
2) Send a change of clothes and towel in a plastic bag WITH YOUR CHILD'S NAME ON IT!
3) Put sunscreen on your child before they come to school. We are not allowed to put sunscreen on the students here.
4) Wear your grade level color t-shirt!
